HCL Technologies: The 5 Things You Should Know

Shiv Nadar founded his first company, S.K.S.B.L, at 18 years old. The two-man team had a primary focus on designing tear-drop shaped lamps, which led the company to specialize in that industry.

Nadar then set his sights on becoming India’s first electrical equipment designer to win a gold medal at the Computing World Cup. This success lead him to eventually serve in the Indian army, where he learned about high-performance computing and graphic design; this allowed him to join a major Indian engineering and technology company early in his career. He then went off and started his own company that became S.K.S.B.L.

As a designer, he went on to design India’s first portable calculator and electronic gaming device, the SVAB1000.

HCL is about 50% company owned by two of Nadar’s children, Narayan Goyal and Anil Khandekar, both engineers. This leaves Khandekar free to run HCL’s day-to-day operations and focus on business development.

One major difference between S.K.S.B.L and HCL is that HCL develops its own chips whereas S.K.S.B.L. mostly uses off the shelf (OO) chips.

The creation of silicon grew and matured as time went by, resulting in chips from complex circuits to photolithography, then rock-chip, silicon valley… to low-power, silicon microchips. The demand for computing hardware grew, and as both technology and computing requirements shifted towards Netbooks, mobile phones and more, the demand for smart gadgets also rose — this created a need for customization. So the two-man team that started S.K.S.B.L began exploring different opportunities.
